چکیده

Deputy Director for Conservation Research, S. African Forestry Research Institute, Dept. of Water Affairs, Forestry and Environmental Conservation, Pretoria, Rep. of South Africa. Abstract--This paper summarises patterns of landuse and management in mediterranean-type ecosystems of South Africa and, in greater detail, aspects of current management of fynbos mountain catchments. The managed fire regime and how it is likely to affect ecosystems is outlined. Controversial questions about the effect of fire frequency on species diversity and on catchment nutrient and water balance, and about the ecological effects of unseasonal burning, indicate priorities for research. The biology of invasive plants needs more thorough study. Techniques of applying fire need development to allow more flexible management.

Nutrients and Water Relations in Mediterranean-Type Ecosystems1

The broad correspondence between the sclerophyllous shrub form and the climate in mediterranean-type ecosystems indicates a climatic control over the vegetation particularly with respect to the summer drought, but all five regions are noted for nutrient deficiencies, especially Australia and South Africa. As studies of these ecosystems are completed, divergences related to the control of commun...

Regional-scale risk assessment methodology using the Relative Risk Model (RRM) for surface freshwater aquatic ecosystems in South Africa

To maximise the long-term use of limited ecosystem services in South Africa, managers continually require approaches to optimise the establishment of balances between the use and protection of ecosystems to ensure sustainability. Surface freshwater aquatic ecosystems are dynamic and difficult to manage effectively. Sound management protocols that can identify and rank threats to these ecosystem...

Rangeland Degradation Assessment in the South Slope of the Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar, Northeast Libya Using Remote Sensing Technology

The degradation rate of Mediterranean steppes, especially in North Africa is 1% per year, and this considered a high  rate of degradation. This study conducted in 2014 in the south slope of the Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar, northeast Libya to quantify the vegetation recovery rate and assess selected Vegetation Indices (VIs) for mapping rangelands degradation status using remote sensing technology. Throug...
